In order to increase link popularity, you must study up on the ins and outs of the process. There are some things that you can do that will kill your links, and you should know about those first.

Being that Google is the largest search engine company there is, they should be your first target. Page ranking isn’t doing what it used to do in the algorithms that Google uses. Sure it’s still important, but it’s not the all inclusive solution that it once was. Apparently, having more relevant and valid links floating around the internet is more effective than having a few links from high ranking sites. So in that, reciprocal linking isn’t the most powerful tool in SEO. The more links you get the better, but don’t let the links be from spamming sites. That will kill your organic search results.

You also have to look at the placement of your link within whatever page you are linked from…because Google does. If it is just a link in a list of links, the impact is not that relevant. If the link is surrounded by relevant content, then you end up with link importance as seen by search engines.

You really have to be careful with what you name your site, the meta data you place within the index file of the site, and such are all large players in the overall importance of your website.
These are things that are largely ignored by many a site, but the relevance is there.

Within your content, your words have to be related. The overall site has to make sense to the engine or it will list you as a spamming site and call it a day. It’s also better to have your site have many links that are on different pages of the sites, and not all piled up on the sidebar and such.

Watch out when you buy links from link brokers because you usually don’t receive the best quality links.

The one overall best way to increase link popularity is through blogs. People write about different things every day and the most information that is dispersed is in blog format. Companies like Blogitive are distributing press releases to these bloggers and they get to write their personal opinions on the subject, product, or site while building link popularity for the issuer of the release.

Make sure you take all these things into consideration and heed my warnings about link farms and irrelevant links. No one wants to get black listed.
