Skype for businesses

Thursday, December 28th, 2006

Photobucket - Video and Image HostingSkype has begun targeting businesses in a big way. They are adding more and more features that will benefit the business function of any company.

With their new 3.0 version software we gain the ability for system administrators to control and configure Skype for an entire company. Skype is giving the companies Internet telephony, messaging, file transfer, and video conferencing.

Skype is still working out the kinks in their system. There is the potential for Skype to penetrate firewalls and open up your system to malware. They are working on getting these issues fixed by reverse engineering the system so as to rid their system of these pests, but the work continues.

The launch of the planet hunter

Thursday, December 28th, 2006

A new expedition is preparing to launch this Wednesday in search of new Earth-like planets. This is the first spacecraft ever built that can find planets that are similar to Earth’s size outside the solar system.

The expedition is being led by the French space agency Cnes. They will be taking Corot out for the first time from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

We’ve been waiting 25 years to get such a mission in space. Prof. Ian Roxburgh, Queen Mary astronomy professor

The mission is not just set to look for planets, but stars as well. They are looking for more information on a star’s life span and evolution.

PayPal Virtual Debit Card goes live

Wednesday, December 27th, 2006

The new “card” is accepted anywhere that takes Mastercard on the Web. You just download the little program to your computer and off you go. Some are criticizing the move saying that it will be more trouble than it is worth, but only time will tell.

I like that you don’t have to give your actual card number out to different places on the Internet. It gives you peace of mind knowing that your identity and money will not be stolen. This might just be something I decide to download for my own personal use.

Just when you thought you were safe

Wednesday, December 27th, 2006

Just when you thought you were safe! It seems that you will soon be inundated with more advertising than you ever thought possible. Verizon is about to allow banner advertisement which will be found on their mobile phones.

The ad campaign will launch at the beginning of 2007 with ads being placed on news, sports, weather, and various other Internet sites. Right now they say that they will be carefully placing the ads in strategic places, but then the full blown campaign will begin.

You can expect to be overrun with ads as this type of advertising becomes more popular. If this barrage is successful, I predict that more and more providers will jump on the bandwagon.
