Dedicated or Shared Hosting: The Low Down
By Bulletz. Filed in Computer Tech |The advantages of Dedicated Hosting seem to far outweigh the advantages of shared hosting, although shared hosting is more economical for most small time users. Dedicated hosting gives you complete control over what you are doing with your site. When I say complete control I am not just talking about your template for whatever website you have built. You have choice over what type of operating system your server runs, what type of software your site uses, and your e-commerce presence. You have total say over your databases, what type of media you can post, and where your email will go. You have access to every aspect of hosting. You don’t have to use the pre-made applications that run on shared servers. You will have plenty of space to run whatever ones you see fit for your site.
Dedicated servers are a little on the pricey side for small time users like bloggers and small startup businesses. Most bloggers don’t need more space than what a shared server will give you. Shared servers are all set up for you while you only have to choose which type of server you will buy into. The three choices are usually Linux, Solaris, or MS hosting. With dedicated server hosting starting around $100 a month and shared hosting as low as $1.50 a month in some cases, you can see how it would be daunting for smaller businesses and webhosts to take on a larger dedicated server bill. Either way you can still count on tech support from your provider which they usually have available every day all day.
Eventually my guess is that dedicated servers will end up being the more desirable avenue as prices begin to drop and servers become more reliable and readily available. As more and more people find the time to dedicate to managing their websites, you can bet that dedicated server usage will be on the uprise.
