In light of my recent hard drive debacle, I have been looking into more ways to back up my system. It’s hard when you have so much information stored on your hard drive and seemingly nowhere else to put it. That’s where Backup Platinum would come into play.

I have been testing this service for the past week and I want to give you an honest and thorough run down of what they have to offer.

The program is easy enough to figure out. Download the thirty day full version trial, then take a look through the features. You have a backup wizard that walks you through the process of backing up your files. You can even back up registries with this tool. I haven’t been able to do that before. You can schedule automatic backups whether you are logged into the computer or not, which certain operating systems allow you to do.

Where do you save your files? You can save them to a CD, DVD, USB drives, local area networks, and FTP servers. It’s a versatile little program. It only takes up about 7 megabytes of space. You can compress your files into self-extracting zip files, which makes restoring easy as a few clicks of your mouse.

There is functionality for you to erase rewritable disks directly through their program. This is a time and aggravation saver. I hate having to go through a bunch of steps to format a disk to use with another program. Backup Platinum also allows you to break up your larger backups onto a number of disks.

All of these things are expressed on their front page, but I have to say that I have not found them to be in the business of false advertising. The program does what it says it will do.

I had a problem with it when I first downloaded the program. The online customer service was quick and cordial. My copy of the program refused to backup files. It would freeze every time I would get to the point where you needed to go to the next screen after choosing which files to backup. Thankfully, the problem is now resolved and I can use the program freely without fail.

My only issue with their online help is that the “Help” section is more like a FAQ. There isn’t any technical help there, but you can email them. Registered users get responses in two days or less. I was emailed the next day for more help with my issue.

The price for a single license with this beauty of a program is only $67, with free upgrades. Not many services will allow you to upgrade to the latest software free. It’s worth the initial price and you will be thankful later on that you paid the money now to get a reliable, useful backup system.
