Sunrocket dies

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

The popular VOIP company Sunrocket is dying a terrible death. As of August 5th, all service will be terminated. They have given those who use the service to other options and a few weeks to fix up our new accounts. You have to decide between Teleblend who allows you to keep your number and use the same equipment, or 8X8 who provides their own equipment.

The companies have struck a deal with Sunrocket to allow their users to painlessly integrate to the new services. Unfortunately, some people who have switched have still lost their service on the interim. No one knows how long the blackout will last. I am without a phone myself as of this morning and have put in a support ticket to find out what is going on.

Never forget to take The Pill again

Friday, July 27th, 2007

Now here is some useful technology. Women all over the world should be pleased that someone has finally thought of them. Remembering to take pills every day can be such a hassle. Remembering your birth control pill can be even more of a hassle. I remember trying to keep myself on a schedule with those things. I would have had better success if I rigged up a system to automagically feed me my pill in the morning before I even got out of bed.

If you have a cell phone, you no longer have to worry. Get the Pillbell and set up your schedule. You can go by either a 21 day or 27 day pill cycle. You are able to set up the time you want to be notified, the day you want to start being notified, and the number of cycles you would like to have reminders sent to your phone. It’s available for nearly any country and is 32 cents per message. You can prepay through PayPal.

It sounds really great, right? So what is the catch? Well, as of right now you can only prepay and you can only do that through PayPal. You are charged 50 cents extra every time you prepay.

I also tried it with my prepaid Virgin Mobile phone, as you get a pin number to sent there to verify that the reminders work with your phone… I didn’t get the pin. I am sure that these are all things that will be worked on in the future. They ask you for your feedback, so if you find any other features you would like to have with the service, feel free to contact them. All in all, I do believe there is a great value in the service. It’s much cheaper to get reminded of your pill every day than to buy diapers because you forgot. ;)

Thunderbird finding a new roost

Friday, July 27th, 2007

I was wondering when this would happen. People have been complaining about how Thunderbird is a great mail program, but not as great as it could be. Why? Well, the developers were way more occupied with how to get Firefox out with it’s constantly updating versions. Firefox is the big ticket item of the two, so it’s no surprise to me that Thunderbird is looking for a new home. If they pull it off, I will be downloading it myself.

Review: Open Source PDF maker

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

I am pleased to see someone finally making this type of program available for free. I downloaded it myself to check out the features. I am impressed with the capabilities. I am able to make PDF files from commonly used word processing programs like Word, and even attach a Creative Commons License to my work when I am done.

They are working on adding the ability to have color and clickable links within the program. Right now, that is my only real complaint. They boast that you can turn anything into a black and white PDF. I have yet to see evidence to make that statement false. Cogniview has really outdone themselves. Take a look for yourself. This is the video that shows how to use the program. It is around three minutes long, which shows how easy it is to just download and use it. The download only takes a few seconds and you are in business.

What is BitTorrent?

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

I used it once and wasn’t impressed. BitTorrent has taken over some people’s obsessions. What is it for? Downloading songs, movies, and videos. We had the entire interface on our computer for a good 10 hours before I gave up on the project. The look reminds me of Limewire, but there are some rather vast differences.

I hated the slow download times. I hated that I had to go searching through any number of torrent sites to find what I was looking for, then synch it up to my computer downloader and wait FOREVER to get just one tiny WAV file. If someone else has figured out the key to this technology please let me know your secret. I still don’t get it.
