BP Energy killing Lake Michigan?

That’s what the Chicago Tribune has said. They accuse BP of unsafe environmental practices. They have been called out for the amount of sludge and ammonia they are dumping into Lake Michigan. BP says that they were misrepresented and have released a fact sheet to dispel all the bad press they are getting from the statements in the Tribune.

BP states that they aren’t even meeting their legal limits as far as how much pollution they actually dump into the Lake. On the same note, they state that only treated water is being put into the Lake and therefore not adversely affecting the environment.

I think it’s such a shame how BP is being attacked. I don’t have any alliance with them, but I have been following their progress. I am all about making the environment better, and I really think that BP is working to show other companies how to help the environment. It really just sounds like a bunch of hype to discredit them so their practices are not adopted by the oil industry at large.

So who is right and who is wrong? I leave that up to you to decide. The fact that BP has come out with transparent statements in reaction to the bad press says something to me. I don’t think they are trying to hide anything. It really just sounds like a bunch of corporate jealousy. If a company succeeds, someone HAS to try and discredit them.

Good note …as an innocent bystander I am totally disappointed as well

Here are some facts I have “filtered” out from all the yadayadayad of the papers and protests…no water treatement plant including BP’s “dumps sludge” into the lake. BP does not do this. If you look at BP’s levels of ammonia and TSS and compare them to cities on the Great Lakes you will see no comparison….BP to me seems more like an environmental steward. Where do you think the city of Chicago puts their treated water??? Into the Chicago River…where it goes down into the Mississippi. What do you think happens sometimes when the sanitary system can’t keep up in Chicago?? Raw Sewage oozes and overflows into the river…raw sewage…you know the stuff that goes down the toilet.

I love the environment. I am not a fan of any oil company, but I don’t pass judgement so fast… take my advice when everybody and their brother jumps on a bandwagon so fast especially politicians and the media, and now rock groups, read the details and get the facts. Don’t be a stooge. Because if you search on the Chicago reclamation department you will find they are not such angels yet their presidnet uses the term sludge…ask yourself, how can the president of a reclamation plant which does what BP’s water plant does call something sludge when he knows it is not?? I would be worried.

Dick don’t be a stooge. As consumers we should voice our opinions not be given opinions by the media and others….

I am totally disheartened by our so called leaders. People that I hoped would get the facts and then make educated decisions for the good of the nation overall. Keep your eyes and mind aware and I think you will feel used as well…even if you are the one yelling at big oil.

Also, what hope can our nation have when we have laws and then our leaders say oh sorry we know you followed the law but too bad. Oh sorry Mr. Smith, I know you paid your taxes on time but we decided that you should pay your taxes 2 months early so we are taking your home and we are fining you. And by the way you must be a sludge crook who is dumping their late payments to pollute my air with that sludge…please….

Also before you people, educate yourself. Atleast look stuff up in Wikepedia. What next

I have to agree with the comment above. I went to the website and the president does call what BP is putting into the lake sludge. This is kind of strange when he runs the same type of facility as BP’s. Also if BP is dumping so is every other water treatment facility.

Also look how the Chicago Reclamation district describes sludge… “Many area golf courses, sod farms, tollway banks and parks are green and fertile because of the rich mixture of sludge and soil. In Fulton County, Illinois, the District is reclaiming 15,000 acres of land which were left barren and ugly from years of strip mining for coal. By leveling the land and enriching the soil with nitrogen, phosphorus and other nutrients in the sludge, wasteland has been converted to fertile ground for agricultural uses. This program is called the Prairie Plan.” http://www.mwrd.org/Processes/solid.htm

Kind of amazing…makes you wonder who is telling truths and who is just slinging sludge.

I signed the ridiculous petition and now I feel pretty much used.
