Cool tech news

Wednesday, July 11th, 2007

It has been a while since I got a chance to write down the thoughts in my head about the things going on in tech-land. I know you were all wondering if I disappeared, but I didn’t.

So here is a synopsis of what I have been looking through in tech news recently.

I think I am in love with the LeapFrog children’s computer. It is going to be a hit with my own son when we get him one. Anything that keeps him from hogging up my computer is good for us.

Can you guess what I am going to say about the security problem linked between Firefox and IE? Yeah, it sounds like something someone would have purposely put inside the program to make people delete Firefox.

Hearing that a lighter, video improved PSP will be out in time for Christmas irks me a bit. I know they had to make up SOMETHING for the holiday season, but now all these kids will be clamoring for the newer version when the older version is actually quite good already.

I am starting to really dislike scientists. They find a baby wooly mammoth frozen and now they want to try and clone it. Uh, they went EXTINCT for a reason. I am not trying to live in Jurassic Park.

It cracks me up that the car companies like Ford are getting more fuel efficient engines for the higher cylindered cars. With all the money they spend on getting that technology together, they could be advocating the use of GREEN fuels instead.

Papa of Playstation and Sony Part ways

Thursday, April 26th, 2007

Looks like someone finally had to bit the bullet over the poor sales that the Playstation 3 has had.

Sony and PlayStation creator Ken Kutaragi made a joint statement Thursday saying Kutaragi would retire from his position as chairman and group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment as of the company’s next shareholders meeting on June 19, and that he has “been considering this decision for some time.”

Yeah, some time since the sales were nowhere near what they expected. Out of three major game consoles, PS3 is dead last and not gaining. It’s a shame, but everyone can’t be a winner. Someone would have had to take the blame first. No wonder it was the creator of the original Playstation that ended up leaving. Him not being there won’t make the console gain any ground. The damage has already been done.

I wonder who will be next?

If you own a PSP you can get [tag]free Wifi, for six months anyway. The new firmware 3.30 update will allow all PSP users to get the free Wifi uplink. After the initial 6 month, another upgrade to a discounted subscription will be available. You can also get a bunch of other goodies with the new firmware updates. Check to see all that you gamers gain. It’s a good deal, as long as the Wifi subscription doesn’t cost more than ten dollars a month.

Wii knocks the socks off its competitors

Friday, March 16th, 2007

I am not surprised that the Nintendo Wii has outsold the Xbox 360 and PS3 at all. I said before that the Wii would win the day. What is really interesting is that it’s not an individual comparison… this is about the combined sales of the rivals as compared to the Wii. I think what really put them over was the interactive interface. These types of games had been up and coming for a while, but it was hard to really put it into the hands of someone who would really be able to get into the play aspect of it all, except for in some popular gaming hot spots.

I applaud Nintendo for coming up with the Wii and getting people off their butts and back into the game. I anticipate that the near future holds some pretty awesome virtual reality gaming tech from them as well.
