European PS3 doesn’t have a chip on its shoulder

Wednesday, February 28th, 2007

With this move on the part of Sony to try and cut cost since the sales for the Playstation 3 are not going as well as they would like, they might have just sealed their fate.

The European version of the Playstation 3 will not have both the PS2 and PS3 computer chips. You would have to get some special software for the PS3 in order for it to play the majority of its predecessor’s games. This is going to be a hassle for many as the demand for less software and more compact consoles rises. It’s no wonder that Sony is trying to cut costs, since their release of the PS3 in the States and Japan has shown the weaknesses of the PS3 and game enthusiasts are flocking to the Wii gaming console.

Sony better get their act together or they won’t have any reason to stay in the gaming business.

Tech & Gaming Writers Wanted

Saturday, February 24th, 2007

New journalists and videographers are wanted for a chance to win cash and prizes. One of the prizes is a contract to write for the Firing Squad. The writing contest prelims end on February 28th and the video contest ceases this Sunday and they have a secondary deadline for March 18th.

It’s a great opportunity for someone to end up winning a load of cash, as well as the job of their dreams. There are a lot of writers already on FiringSquad.com, but they are looking for more creative minds to fill the spaces on the site. The same goes for video gurus. I would love to see some of the entrants videos and writing samples. For that, I would even volunteer to be a judge.

I would love to know if any of you participate and the outcome. Let me know if you enter. It never hurts to win things like money and prizes, even if you don’t get the contract.

The deadlines are coming rather quickly, so make sure to get your best quality samples in as soon as possible. For more information, make sure to click the link below that goes directly to the full press release for the contest.

Launch: Cafe.com in beta

Thursday, February 8th, 2007

Need more games to relieve your stress? You can try out Cafe.com. Still in the Beta stages, they offer a free membership and free game play. The interface is Web 2.0 compliant. Upside is that everything is initially free. Downside is that you have download something in order to play. At one point in gaming with avatars and such, you will notice that you need to purchase *with real money* gold coins to enhance your game play. This is for avatars and accessories for them.

You always have to be connected to the online server in order to play the games. Once you download the client, they will place an icon on your desktop that will connect you to Cafe.com once it is clicked.

Check out the FAQ and see if this is the gaming site for you. They answer most of the questions that you might have before you download the client. Also check out their blog for more information and some neat gadgets for your blogs.

Video Games and Mental Health

Thursday, February 8th, 2007

The two have found their way into the news again. It is becoming increasingly evident that the effects of games on the brain may actually be beneficial. For instance, someone who is bipolar may be able to play a game and end up in a less manic or depressive state.

Researchers at the University of Rochester recently reported finding that children and adults play video games because they fulfill basic psychological needs such as opportunities for achievement, freedom and a sense of connection to others.

The same fundamental belief that aggressive behavior is triggered by violent games is being used in these studies. There was even mention of Dance Dance Revolution being beneficial to overall mental health because of its positive game play experience. I agree with them. I play Tetris when I feel manic and Text Twist when I am depressed. It is a great big help to me and keeps me sane more often than not.
