Cool tech news

Wednesday, July 11th, 2007

It has been a while since I got a chance to write down the thoughts in my head about the things going on in tech-land. I know you were all wondering if I disappeared, but I didn’t.

So here is a synopsis of what I have been looking through in tech news recently.

I think I am in love with the LeapFrog children’s computer. It is going to be a hit with my own son when we get him one. Anything that keeps him from hogging up my computer is good for us.

Can you guess what I am going to say about the security problem linked between Firefox and IE? Yeah, it sounds like something someone would have purposely put inside the program to make people delete Firefox.

Hearing that a lighter, video improved PSP will be out in time for Christmas irks me a bit. I know they had to make up SOMETHING for the holiday season, but now all these kids will be clamoring for the newer version when the older version is actually quite good already.

I am starting to really dislike scientists. They find a baby wooly mammoth frozen and now they want to try and clone it. Uh, they went EXTINCT for a reason. I am not trying to live in Jurassic Park.

It cracks me up that the car companies like Ford are getting more fuel efficient engines for the higher cylindered cars. With all the money they spend on getting that technology together, they could be advocating the use of GREEN fuels instead.

Digital Camera truths told

Thursday, June 14th, 2007

Every day technologies are upgraded. Digital cameras are no exception. I am already on the lookout for my next camera, and that is where digital camera reviews come into play. Real life consumers tell their experiences with the cameras so that you won’t be burned. Experts also give their opinions.

It means a lot to have a plethora of reviews from all across the board. Hearing all good things about a camera doesn’t always mean it’s a good piece of technology. That is when we have to think with a “buyer beware” mentality. I have benefited many times from review sites that give every review and not just the ones that favorably portray the product.

Tech Support Forums

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

One of the best ways to get help is to go to the Internet and search for answers. Many times you will come across a forum that has the question you are asking that has already been answered successfully. The Telrad tech support, for example, is a forum that is geared toward helping those with Telrad Phone systems.

There are a number of tech support forums all over the internet. Each one either is fully dedicated to one type of technology, or has a lot of different threads that deal with many types of technology. If it weren’t for other people with the same problems that I have who have sought help on the ‘net, I may never have learned as much as I have about technology. Make sure you add forums to your e-toolbelt.

Review: Find your Fix – FixYa.com

Monday, April 30th, 2007

I was asked to review this site by someone very interested in seeing what I thought. I am all too happy to oblige :D .

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at PhotobucketFixYa.com is engineered to help consumers with technical problems they are having with their devices. There is live free tech help, a search for repair facilities in your area, and a user elected answer database. The interface is easy to understand and navigate. I adore the sticky pad rating that users can give to answers they find on the site.

One of my favorite features: You don’t have to sign up or sign in to find solutions. I hate having to sign up for a site or pay for their service just to see a simple solution to a problem. Many sites have that problem, thankfully this is not one of them.

Even though the site is still in beta, there is plenty of action. If you are an expert who wants to help out, you can register as such and choose your area of expertise. If not, you can register as a regular user and be privy to using the rating system, commenting, and such. You don’t have to be an expert to help others with their problems.

If you are a repair person, you can advertise on the site. I have done a search for repair people in my area. I am hoping that they are able to add more facilities to their database. My area didn’t have that many entries, but I hope that they can remedy this soon. I would love for someone who lives in a more diverse area to do a search with their zip code and tell me what they come up with in relation to where their home is located. Let me know!

You can also give the FixYa people your feedback. They are located on Spicypage, just like me.

One for the girls: Teen wins 100K for research

Friday, March 16th, 2007

I just had to point this out. I read about the girl who won $100,000 science scholarship this morning and thought “You go, girl!”. Not enough gals are getting in on this part of the world and I applaud any who are smart enough and determined enough to get into science and math and do well with it. I hope that we see her face many more times as the years go on. I see great things for this girl… great things!!
