The OS race is on

Monday, January 22nd, 2007

Linux is setting up its Vista counterattack. They are joining forces to make sure that their new operating system does not fail. If they do it right, they will be poised to truly rival or even take over the operating system race. Linux has become a more feasible alternative to Windows with their release of different levels of OS like Linux proper and Ubuntu.

Firefox 3 and Internet Explorer 8 predictions

Saturday, January 13th, 2007

Firefox 3 is going to become an entity in and of itself. From the wiki that I read on FF3, Mozilla is going after the highest prize: becoming a stand alone information module. Their 3rd version will be bigger, better, and stronger than any other version thus far. Firefox 4 is already in the works for 2008, as well. Gran Paradiso, as the third installment has been dubbed, will be out in the third quarter of this year. Microformats are the key to Mozilla turning this browser into something really huge. If Mozilla can succeed in becoming the information broker, they will blow the competition out of the water.

Internet Explorer 8, I fathom, will still end up with major security issues. Microsoft seems to be plagued with having to make patch after patch for their products. They also suffer from copycat-itis. One day I was looking at a screenshot that I could have sworn was FF2 but it was IE7! I guess they figure that something so popular can’t be bad. They are trying to build on the interface and make it their own, but it’s coming off really really wrong.

I know I seem rather biased against everything Microsoft, but believe me, if they got their stuff together and became as they once were I would be singing their praises. I mean, come on! They are going to be supporting microformats in their next upgrade, too. The skins are starting to look alike. I have a feeling they will be forever trying to play catch up on this one.

Four More Patches for Microsoft

Wednesday, January 10th, 2007

This time it’s not Vista or Office 2007 with the issues. They fixed Internet Explorer 7 which had a critical error. Three patches were for older versions of Office. The holes could allow a hacker to control a person’s entire computer from a remote system. The patches can be installed directly from the Microsoft website if your automatic updater is not available.

News like this just keeps pushing me over to Ubuntu.

‘Sync’ your car

Monday, January 8th, 2007

Ford Motors and Microsoft have teamed up to bring you more efficient talking while driving technology. Yes, there is a new system called the Sync that will allow drivers to make hands free phone calls, have text messages read to them out loud, and play their digital media players like the iPod in the car. It will become a factory installed nuisance…ahem..featured in 2008 and it is said that over 600 million cars will be fitted with the technology in the near future.

If we already have problems with people being too distracted with their gadgets to drive, I would like to see what the accident rates do in 2008 when all this goes live.

Microsoft’s RSS Patent Application, Bloggers Furious

Thursday, December 28th, 2006

Microsoft has gone insane. They just put in for a patent for the RSS *really simple syndication* technology because they “want to make it better”. YEAH …whatever. They know how big syndication is all over the Internet. There are so many places that provide it for free, they just want to monetize it…therefore making it better for them.

I am not surprised at their move, but they shouldn’t be surprised by the outcry either. Many bloggers are up in arms in protest to this proposal. I am one of them.
